BBC Robot Wars Judge awarded MBE by the King.
For services to engineering
Dr Lucy Rogers MBE FREng FIMechE HonFIED has today (15 June 2024) been awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire by His Majesty the King in recognition of services to engineering.
Author, BBC Robot Wars judge, and wrangler of robotic dinosaurs, Lucy has carved out a wide-ranging career that she describes as the perfect mix of ‘fun, creativity, logic and problem solving’ in a discipline that is often misunderstood. She hopes that her award will encourage others that varied careers touching on different disciplines are possible and can be respected.
‘I am deeply honoured to receive this award from His Majesty and immensely grateful for the acknowledgment of the work done by engineers.’
“We need more engineers if we are to address the challenges we face. Engineers use their skills and expertise to solve problems and improve lives. We are creative, and when we collaborate, great things happen. I’d like to see engineers more widely recognised and celebrated as this will encourage more young people into engineering.
‘For me, engineering has been a wonderfully fulfilling and fun career. I’ve met and worked with fascinating people and had the opportunity to do exciting and interesting things. I’d like to thank all those who have supported and encouraged me’.
• Lucy was awarded her PhD from Lancaster University
She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers.
• Lucy is currently out of the country storm-chasing in the USA as part of the research for her second book Up: A Scientist’s Guide to the Magic Above Us to be published by Transworld, a division of Penguin Random House in 2026. Her first book It’s ONLY Rocket Science: An Introduction in Plain English was published in 2008 by Springer and is used by universities and training facilities around the world. She is a contributory author to two other science and engineering publications specifically written for young people.
