Formal education culminated in Lucy being given a doctorate for playing with bubbles. She is also a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society and a member of the Association of British Science Writers. She also has a City and Guilds in Woodturning.

In 2011 Lucy attended the Singularity University Graduate Studies Program, based at the NASA Ames Campus in California. The university focuses on how technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Nanotech, Biotech, Networks, Bioinformatics and Medicine can be used to tackle the tremendous challenges facing the world today – such as energy, water, health, poverty, pandemics and the environment.
